Foreign Body Removal Explanation

What is a Corneal Foreign Body?

Any kind of foreign object that’s stuck in your eye is a corneal foreign body. A number of things can get stuck in the eye, including:

  • Sand
  • Dirt
  • Insects
  • Metal shavings
  • Plastic particles

In many cases, corneal foreign bodies are so small that they’re virtually invisible. Often, the only way that you’ll know about the corneal foreign body is by experiencing some eye symptoms.

What are the symptoms of a Corneal Foreign Body?

Your eye’s cornea has tiny nerves that are highly sensitive to irritation. If a foreign body is stuck in your eye, you’re likely to develop symptoms quite quickly. These may include:

  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurred vision
  • Watery eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Eye pain

If you have a corneal foreign body, you may have the sensation of something being stuck in your eye, but you can’t see it when you look for it because it’s either very tiny or is in an area where you can’t access it.

What should I do if I have a Corneal Foreign Body?
If you start to experience signs of a corneal foreign body and they don’t go away within a few hours, you may need help to get the foreign body out. Sometimes, your eye will push the object out naturally, but in other cases, it becomes trapped very deep in your eye.

If you’re in significant pain and your eye’s appearance changes, it’s best to contact Dr. Malouf for advice right away.

How does the doctor remove Corneal Foreign Bodies?
Dr. Malouf can apply an eye-drop anesthesia to your eye to help you stay comfortable during the procedure. She’ll then carefully extract the foreign body and ensure that your entire eye is clear of any other debris.

After Dr. Malouf removes the foreign body, you’ll need to closely follow aftercare instructions to heal quickly. You may need to flush your eyes regularly, use prescription eye drops, and abstain from wearing contact lenses until your eye is fully healed.

If you have a foreign body stuck in your eye, it’s important to take action before it becomes deeply embedded.
